Confessions of a convention virgin

I’ve literally just arrived home from the RT convention in Chicago after a grueling fifteen hour drive. But it was worth it! A week of nothing but book conversations? Heaven! But I have a confession to make... I was a virgin. A convention virgin, that is.

See? I even got a button to prove it!

Anyway, this past week was full of so many firsts for me. My first convention. The first time meeting people I’ve known for years. First time in Chicago. My first signing (thank you to everyone that came out to see me :D I got to meet so many wonderful people!!)… It was awesome and I came home with a bag full of fantastic pretties!

Oh. And what's this? Why it's an ARC of our own Katie McGarry's Pushing the Limits!

So now that I’ve gotten my maiden voyage into convention-land out of the way, I thought I’d give you a super quick rundown of things from a newbie’s perspective…

Tips

1. Resist the urge to over pack. If you think there might be a chance you won’t need it, don’t bring it. I’m serious. You won’t need five pairs of shoes, every pair of earrings you own, or that letter you wrote to your high school crush…

2. What happens at RT will not stay at RT. If you do one too many tequila shots and decide dancing on the table is a good idea, it’s going to follow you home. This is the age of youtube, people. That stuff stains worse than grease…

3. Keep arms and legs inside the tram car while in motion. In this case, by tram car, I mean escalator. And by keep arms and legs inside while in motion, I mean it’s probably not a good idea to try and hop the railing if you see your favorite author passing on the steps alongside the escalator…

I'm sure there's tons of good of advice out floating around there, so feel free to jump in! Was anyone else at RT? Any convention do's and don'ts come to mind?

Jus, your escalator story reminds me of touring the Budweiser factory. The tour guide went out of her way to remind us that there is free beer at the end--we didn't need to grab a bottle from the production line running by at 700-1200 bottles a minute. I had to ask, had anyone really tried? "If they hadn't," she said, "I wouldn't need to tell you." Scary.

My author convention advice is, Don't Be A Wallflower. You're there to rub elbows. Make new friends and then introduce them to each other.
